The Human Services Leadership Community
A Project of Workforce Performance Group
Overview
Staff training is crucial! It helps you to hold on to your best and brightest people. It can always be counted on to reduce staff turnover. There is little doubt that the quality of life for the people you serve depends on the quality of your organization’s supervision and leadership. That requires training. But right now, if money is tight and manager training is falling by the wayside, we have a solution.
Imagine the benefit of training staff on topics of critical importance to the success of your organization, for forty minutes, twice a month, all year long. Imagine a management staff developing their strengths to their highest level. It won’t require travel, work or schedule interruption. And, it’s available at a small fraction of the cost of other training opportunities.
This is on-line leadership education and support for front line supervisors and middle managers working in human services. This program, delivered by professionals with years of experience in human services leadership, is based on a curriculum developed in 2005 and delivered, in live workshops, to over 500 human service managers. It is now reformatted for the on-line user. Read on…
The Human Services Leadership Community is available on an annual subscription to organizations providing services to seniors in long term care, nursing homes or in their communities; and organizations serving people with developmental disabilities in the U.S. and Canada. By March 1, 2012, editions will be available for other special populations.
Participants in this program can expect:
Twenty-four, 40-minute presentations, over a period of one year, on crucial leadership competencies (see curriculum), each one, followed by Q &A sessions.
Q&A sessions to last until all questions and comments have been heard or answered.
Discussion guide with key concepts and insights for download.
Ideas for practice on key insights between sessions.
Opportunity for interaction with other staff facing similar challenges from different settings and potentially widely varying geographic locations.
Presentation schedules at convenient times for all work shifts.
Availability of recorded sessions should a participant miss the live presentation.
FacebookLinkedIn page and to continue knowledge exchange amongst participants.

Background
Larry Wenger and Annie Lachs are veterans of human services each having served for 40 years in various leadership roles. In 2005 Larry started Workforce Performance Group. Together they developed a leadership curriculum designed to train front line supervisors and middle managers. Since 2005, 30 organizations have called upon Workforce Performance Group to help newly appointed and promoted managers understand how to succeed on the job. Here are comments made by some of those students following the completion of their program:
“I did not expect to learn so many useful and practical things; it gave me positive things to take to my group home.”
“It exceeded my expectations. It was way more than just a power point.”
“I was fully engaged in learning, as was everyone else.”
“I take more time to listen and develop plans to change. I have learned to appreciate the good in people before critiquing the bad.”
“It makes you think about other ways to deal with people and what the employee is going through and their perspective.”
“ This course has impacted my ability to be a co-worker to the residential staff. Now I’m attentive to their needs. I am more supportive in their efforts and understand their needs.”
“ I have gained more confidence as a leader and I feel I am more open.”
On-line training is fast becoming a valued learning tool in human service organizations. While some leaders remain skeptical about the ability of a virtual classroom to be an effective learning environment, we are convinced that on-line learning is the wave of the future. The economics of online training cannot be denied. Now, a full fledged leadership development program can be delivered for less than 20% or the cost of a face-to-face proram. It’s an affordable training program with the substance you need to improve staff competence.
Workforce Performance Group has accepted the challenge to deliver on-line training as a viable vehicle. As professionals we are committed to using virtual classrooms to provide life changing learning.
