I've had both good and poor supervisors and managers. The ones that stood out as being the best were the ones that were quite clear in their expectations of not only me, but the team. He would check on us periodically and would actually show an interest and a degree of excitment in the work we produced or problems we solved. He was someone I respected and would go the extra mile for because he was sincere in his praise when it was given. It wasn't like we were told we were fabulous everyday - he just told us often enough to make it genuine. If what we did wasn't up to standards, he let us know that too but had the decency to speak with us privately about ways to improve. It was a respectful and safe environment to work in. Other managers over the years left a lot less to be desired unfortunately. It really came down to good communication skills and it takes time to learn that. Good supervisors and managers are comfortable in their own skin and realize that we are all working toward the same mission, vision and values.
